Overview

Alumni is a new development by the Forshaw Group formed from the conversion and extension of the historic St Michael’s School on George Leigh St, in the heart of Ancoats Urban Village,Manchester.

Alumni has two distinct characters, Alumni A, the conversion of the existing Victorian buildings fronting George Leigh St and Alumni B, a wholly modern addition to the corner of the site fronting both George Leigh St and Cotton St. The two building elements are arranged around a secure central courtyard garden area for residents.

Named after the former St Michael’s School buildings, Alumni is a new development by Forshaw Land & Property Group comprising the conversion of the Victorian former School building and the construction of a new block on the site of the former Two Terriers Public House which was demolished many years ago.

Ancoats has undergone a transformation in recent years, gone is the post-industrial decline of the 20th Century and the area has become a vibrant community on the edge of the City centre. The vast mills have been converted into desirable modern apartments; the creation of new public spaces and a  comprehensive regeneration strategy providing a successful mix of commercial, leisure, residential and community buildings have combined to create a unique environment, a true urban village.

The scheme will provide a total of 20 high quality apartments aimed at the owner-occupier market. Ranging in size from a 450 sq ft 1 bedroom apartment with an additional bed deck to a 1,580 sq ft, 3 bedroom duplex with large roof terrace.Development is underway with a targeted completion date of July 2017.

History

Historically known as ‘Little Italy’ due to the large number of Italian immigrants who settled in the area in the 19th Century, St Michael’s Church was built in 1864 as the main Parish Church serving the Catholic community of Ancoats, the School was added at a later date and served the education needs of the area and later converted to a hostel.
